Introduction

These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your access to and use of Recontact’s mobile application and website (collectively, the "Services"). By installing, accessing, or using the Services, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Services.

Eligibility

  • You must be at least 16 years old or have parental/guardian consent to use the Services.
  • You represent that you have the authority to enter into these Terms and will comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

Overview of the Services

Recontact provides helper information about callers and message senders by processing data on your device. The Services:

  • Detect phone state changes (ringing/off-hook/idle) to identify calls.
  • Read call details after phone state changes to attach call metadata (e.g., number).
  • Check your local address book to avoid false positives (e.g., a number saved in your phone contacts is treated as valid even if not saved in Recontact).
  • Listen to notifications to detect new SMS or WhatsApp messages and extract a phone number when present.
  • Generate local notifications to present helper information.

All core functionality is processed on-device. The Services do not upload your call logs, contacts, or notification content to external servers.

Permissions and Access

To deliver the Services, the app may request the following Android permissions and capabilities:

  • Phone state access (READ_PHONE_STATE): detect call state changes.
  • Call log access (READ_CALL_LOG): read recent call metadata for identification.
  • Contacts access (READ_CONTACTS): verify numbers against your address book to reduce false positives.
  • Notification access (Notification Listener): detect new notifications and extract minimal metadata (e.g., phone number and source app) when available.
  • Post notifications (Android 13+): display on-device alerts after identification.
  • Foreground service: maintain reliable detection while the app runs in the background.
  • Wake lock: keep the device awake briefly during critical detection tasks.
  • Vibrate: provide haptic alerts for notifications.

You can allow or revoke these permissions at any time in your device settings. Some features may not function without the corresponding permissions.

User Responsibilities

  • Lawful use: You agree to use the Services only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms.
  • Privacy and consent: Do not misuse phone numbers or contact data. Obtain consent where required by applicable laws.
  • No data upload: Do not attempt to export, scrape, or upload contacts, call logs, or notification content outside your device using the Services.
  • Security: Do not circumvent, disable, or interfere with any security or permission mechanisms.
  • Accuracy: You understand that identification and helper information may not be accurate or complete and should be used as guidance only.

Prohibited Conduct

You may not:

  • Harass, spam, or otherwise misuse any contact information surfaced by the Services.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or modify the Services beyond what is permitted by law.
  • Use automated means to collect data from the Services.
  • Interfere with the operation of the Services or access the Services using methods not provided by Recontact.

Third-Party Services

  • Recontact integrates with system apps and may launch actions in third-party apps (e.g., WhatsApp). Recontact is not affiliated with or endorsed by these third parties and does not access their internal data.
  • Your use of third-party apps is subject to their respective terms and policies.

Local Processing and Data Use

  • On-device processing: All call state, call log, contact checks, and notification metadata are processed locally on your device.
  • No cloud storage: Recontact does not store your personal information on external servers for core functionality.
  • Notifications: Alerts are generated locally and not delivered via remote servers.

Disclaimers

  • The Services are provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied.
  • Recontact does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of identification or helper information.
  • The Services are not a replacement for carrier features, emergency services, or professional advice.
  • Device, OS version, OEM customizations, and app permissions may affect functionality.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Recontact and its affiliates shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, profits, revenue, or business, arising out of or related to your use of the Services.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Recontact and its affiliates from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of or in any way connected with your use of the Services, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any law or third-party rights.

Termination

Because the mobile app operates entirely on-device without remote access, we cannot suspend or terminate your use of the app on your device.

We may, however, take actions relating to our online Services and distribution, including restricting access to our website or online resources, discontinuing updates or distribution of the app, removing content hosted by us, and taking actions required to comply with law or protect users. Where reasonably practicable, we will provide notice of material changes.

You may stop using the Services at any time. Uninstalling the app removes local data processing.

Changes to the Services and Terms

We may update the Services and these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date, providing in-app notices, or posting updates on our website. Your continued use of the Services after changes, where permitted by law, constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of Germany, without regard to its conflict of laws principles. You agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Berlin, Germany, for any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Services.
